Supporting Bioenergy and Forest Management Together Workshop

May 17

Free

This event made possible by a grant from West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund and offered for free for all attendees thanks to Wilson Engineering Services

Facilitator(s):

  • Tom Wilson, Wilson Engineering Services;
  • Geoff Bristow PA Department of Environmental Protection

Summary: This workshop is designed for those interested in learning about how we can use biomass to heat and power homes and businesses and forest sustainability. Come learn how sustainable forestry management, wood products and the biomass energy industry work together to grow more PA trees, jobs and businesses while protecting our environment. The tour will start where it all begins, in the forest. The Kane Experimental Forest was established in 1932 as a living laboratory to conduct long-term studies on individual tree and understory vegetation measurements; treatments such as thinnings, regeneration cuts, uneven-age cuts, and long-term measurements of unmanaged forest. Workshop attendees will be able to see how smart removal of some biomass helps the forest to thrive, in addition to wood- and biomass energy-based businesses, with an opportunity to see the downsides of an unmanaged forest in contrast.

After visiting the forest, attendees will visit the Kane High School Biomass Heating 15 minutes away.  A representative from Allegheny National Forest will discuss fuel supply for the biomass heating project, and John Rook, Facilities Manager for the school district, will provide an overview and tour of how they use biomass for renewable heating and its benefits to the school over oil or gas.
